The Kimberly Ordaz Award

The Kimberly Ordaz Award is presented to an individual in our community who embodies tremendous passion and commitment to their own family and to our entire community.

About Kimberly Ordaz

Kimberly Ordaz PhotoKim loved teaching! She was a three generation teacher. Kim grew up in this community, attended Gilroy schools and spent time with her immediate family as a young person in the Marshall Islands where her parents were teachers. Kim graduated from Chico State University with a degree in Art, she returned to Gilroy and began her teaching career. While her desire was to teach Art at the secondary level she was hired as a kindergarten teacher and it was her calling! She served on many committees at the school level as well as the district level. Kim’s teaching career with GUSD lasted 30 years. In 2010 she was named “Teacher of the Year” for Santa Clara County representing Gilroy Unified School District. 

Kim met and married Chris Ordaz. She and Chris have two daughters, Kaylyn and Claire. She was a devoted mother and supporter of their activities which mostly consisted of Competition Dance. She was involved with the Kids Discover Arts program through the City of Gilroy and her most recent goal was to teach art lessons out of her home.

Award Criteria

The candidate, throughout her career and personal work, will have demonstrated leadership characteristics. Her contributions will have required cooperative efforts of other individuals, departments and/or agencies. She will  have successfully demonstrated her abilities as an individual, as a team member, and as a leader. Moreover, she will have demonstrated a willingness to serve and assist others in her own personal and professional development, and will have contributed to the successes of others as well.

The candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to her community by sharing her time and talent in ways that benefit the community or individuals within it. The candidate will also have demonstrated exceptional personal commitment to civic endeavors outside of her professional obligations.
